1793 1/2C XF45BN PCGS #1000

Previously sold for $21,150.00 at Heritage Auction #1216, Lot 4008 (2015 FUN). Heritage Description: 1793 C-3, B-3 Half Cent, XF45 Sharply Struck and Attractive 1793 1/2 C C-3, B-3, R.3, XF45 PCGS. This is the second most available variety for the year of the four die pairings known, although there is not much rarity differential between the C-2, B-2 and C-3, B-3. The Cohen-3, Breen-3 marriage is generally available in higher grades, however, as this Choice XF example amply demonstrates. The medium olive-brown obverse tends to a bit darker shade on the reverse. A glancing mark runs through Liberty's forehead and hair, with scattered other marks in the fields and one underlining HALF on the reverse. The usual bit of die rust appears on the reverse under TES. A nice coin for the grade, showing good sharpness throughout and minimal distractions. Our EAC grade VF25. Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2222, Variety PCGS# 35009, Base PCGS# 1000, Greysheet# 80837) Weight: 6.74 grams Metal: 100% Copper

1796 10C AU55 PCGS #4461

Heritage Comments: 1796 Draped Bust Dime, AU55 First-Year Issue, JR-1 1796 10C JR-1, R.3, AU55 PCGS. Despite a 22,135-piece Guide Book mintage, the 1796 date is surprisingly available leading many researchers to believe additional 1796-dated dimes were struck in 1797. The JR-1 variety is the most available of seven 1796 die marriages. It is one of the most recognizable, too, with a large cud partially obscuring star 1 on most examples. The cud formed early on and, while often identified as a late die state, only a few 1796 JR-1 coins lack the anomaly. This Choice About Uncirculated example displays a ragged, prominent cud at the first star and a blurry, arc-like die crack curving in front of Liberty's face to the neck and shoulder. A horizontal die crack beneath the eagle's right (facing) wing confirms the middle-to-late die stage. Slight central weakness is characteristic of the later strikes. Tan-gold toning is prominent at the margins and lightens toward the centers, supported by pleasing mint luster that remains throughout the lightly abraded surfaces. Population (all 1796 varieties): 25 in 55, 85 finer (12/23). Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 236B, Variety PCGS# 38742, Base PCGS# 4461, Greysheet# 213014) Weight: 2.70 grams Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper

Heritage Auctions Comments: 1805 Large Eagle Dime, AU53 JR-2, Four Berries 1805 10C 4 Berries, JR-2, R.1, AU53 PCGS. Magenta fields contrast with pearl-white high points. A well detailed and minimally abraded Heraldic Eagle type coin. All 1805 dimes were struck from the same obverse die, notable for a long diagonal extension from the northeast tip of the 5 in the date. That die was paired with two reverses, readily distinguished by the berry count on the eagle's branch. 1839 10C No Drapery MS64 PCGS #4571

Gerry Fortin Comments: (at The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors) 1839 Variety 104 Obverse 1.2: Polished Die, Repunched 39 Reverse D: Heavy Die Polish Lines, Die Scratch STATE(S) to Rim, Rotated Left 18 Degrees Obverse 1.2 Reverse D Reverse D - Reverse Die Polish Lines Comments: During March 2018, Gerry Fortin Rare Coins received a consignment containing an 1839 dime graded PCGS MS64. Obverse and reverse fields were prooflike with heavy die polish lines on the reverse at multiple angles. The first records of this dime appearing on the market are at the Heritage September 2015 Long Beach sale as lot 3402. During that sale, Heritage described the 1839 dime as unlisted in the Fortin web-book. Upon consignment arrival, an in hand inspection allowed the determination that this strike took place very early during the Obverse 1 and Reverse D die pairing. During the initial Variety 104 die pairing, Obverse 1 is in the same die state as previous pairing with Reverse C and exhibits considerable die cracking. There is an obvious die crack from rim through Star 2 to Liberty's hand and then down through left side of shield with a final exit point through the 3 digit to rim. Additional die crack is seen starting at rim, through foot and then along Liberty's right leg. A third die crack is noted from top of Liberty's head through Star 8 and cap. Finally, a die crack connects Stars 10 through 13. Reverse D has been heavily polished with prooflike fields and bold die polish lines that run at multiple angles through the denomination. On the plate coin, the die scratch from STATE(S) to rim is visible and validates that this polished die is Reverse D. Interestingly, the reverse die rotation is left 18 degrees as will be seen in subsequent die states for this die pairing. Please see the above enhanced image that well illustrates the die polish lines. Plate Coin: G. Fortin Rare Coins Inventory, PCGS MS64 First Auction Appearance 2015 September 17-20 Long Beach Expo U.S. Coins Signature Auction (Heritage Auctions), where it sold for $1,410.00

A tiny mintage of 24,000 coins makes the 1881 dime a better date in the Seated series, and Gerry Fortin rates the issue R.5 in Mint State. Coins can be located through mid-Uncirculated grades with some searching, but the 1881 is a major rarity in this remarkable grade. Each side of this Superb Gem is frosty and untoned. As usual, Liberty's head shows a touch of unimportant softness, but the remaining devices are boldly rendered. Upgrade from AU53 sample Heritage Notes: 1839 Seated Quarter, MS63 No Drapery, Closed Claws Reverse 1839 25C No Drapery MS63 PCGS. Briggs 2-B. Closed Claws Reverse. These second-year Seated Liberty quarters were saved to a slightly lesser degree than their first-year counterparts, but collectors should still be able to locate a Mint State example with some patience. Olive-gold and gunmetal-gray patina is more pronounced on the reverse than it is on the obverse. Partial luster shines through on each side. The impression is bold overall with a few points of softness on Liberty's head and foot. The eagle is razor-sharp by comparison. 1853 25C Arrows and Rays MS64 PCGS #5426

Heritage Auctions Description: 1853 Arrows and Rays Quarter, MS64 Sought-After One-Year Type Coin 1853 25C Arrows and Rays MS64 PCGS. The lack of circulating silver coinage due to the huge influxes of California gold was resolved by the lower-weight Arrows and Rays coins, but nearly all of the quarters circulated. In general, the larger-denomination an Arrows (and sometimes Rays) silver coin is, the more likely it is to have circulated. The certified populations for the 1853 Arrows and Rays quarters include a handful of MS67 pieces, but those populations thin out drastically at or above the Gem grade level, making an MS64 coin an optimal grade for collectors. This is an oyster-gray example that is sharply struck in all areas. No obvious marks are seen on either side. From The Wildwood Collection. (Registry values: P5) (PCGS# 5426)

Heritage Auctions Comments: 1835 O-101 Half Dollar, MS64 Colorfully Toned and Smooth 1835 50C O-101, R.1, MS64 PCGS. Splendid ocean-blue, plum-red, and sun-gold toning endows this lustrous and uncommonly attractive Choice Capped Bust type coin. The fields and eagle appear pristine, and the portrait displays only minor contact. The strike is good, although not complete on a few star centers. While the present coin is just shy of earning Condition Census status, its eye appeal competes with any examples of the variety. Ex: ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2021), lot 3814. Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24FZ, Variety PCGS# 39927, Base PCGS# 6168, Greysheet# 194026) Weight: 13.48 grams Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper

1836 50C Reeded Edge MS63 PCGS #6175

Coast Coin Comments: Reeded Edge. These were among the first coins struck with the new steam press installed at the Philadelphia Mint in 1836. Approximately 1200 pieces were struck. This is one of the better surviving examples with a solid strike, no heavy contact marks and wonderful original surfaces. A nice golden and light dove-gray core gives way to a touch of peripheral teal as well as some golden-orange in the protected areas of the design. An important piece of American numismatics. Just 8 have graded numerically finer at PCGS.

Lightly toned in a blend of pearl gray and pale gold, this handsome example also offers sharp to full striking detail for the central design elements. As one of the most common die marriages of the issue, the 1838 GR-11 is a popular type candidate for the collector seeking a single example of the brief Capped Bust, Reeded Edge half dollar design of 1838 to 1839. In an absolute sense, however, Mint State survivors of this type are scarce, especially from a market availability standpoint.

Heritage Auctions Notes: 1839 Reeded Edge Half Dollar, Fine Details Rare Small Letters Reverse, GR-1 1839 50C Small Letters, GR-1, R.7 -- Filed Rims -- PCGS Genuine. Fine Details. The 1839 GR-1 Reeded Edge half dollar is the Small Letters Guide Book key, and it is the rarest Reeded Edge variety aside from the famous 1838-O. In his Registry of Die Varieties for Reeded Edge Bust half dollars, Dick Graham writes: "As of this writing, I have verified 10 coins in all grades and conditions. Several of these coins have been discovered in the last 5 years, so it is still possible that more will surface in the future, but never enough to satisfy demand for variety and Red Book collectors." This piece displays deep gunmetal-gray patina and moderate wear, with light, scattered abrasions. A singular mark in the left obverse field between Liberty's chin and star 2 serves as a pedigree marker. PCGS notes rim filing, which prevents a numeric grade.

1839 50C Drapery MS63 PCGS #6232

From Legend: Lot #1 Quantity1 Estimate2,000.00 - 2,500.00 USD Description THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION POPULAR FIRST YEAR ISSUE. A desirable and highly sought by date and type collectors. Far above average strike detail for the issue--with crisp hair strand delineation on Liberty’s head and full breast feathers on the eagle. Under strong magnification there are a couple of light breaks in luster and a few random contact marks, but all are commensurate with the grade. Blazing white, cartwheel luster. Two major varieties of 1839 dated halves were coined. The first was Without Drapery at the elbow and they were minted only in 1839 and are considered quite scarce. The other was With Drapery at the elbow (such as this coin) and they were coined from 1839 through 1852. Although a more common example, they are still difficult to come by in higher mint state grades. PCGS 12, NGC 15. A mere 44 coins grade finer. Listed in the PCGS Price Guide for $2,600. The last example to trade at auction was in October 2016 and it fetched $2,233. With the demand for white Seated halves as strong as it is, we anticipate this high end piece will fetch a handsome price! Cert. Number 35409453 PCGS # 6232.00

The 1860-O is one of the only No Motto Seated dollar issues that is usually affordable in Mint State, much to the advantage of budget-conscious type collectors. The present coin displays a touch of golden toning around the rims, but is otherwise brilliant -- and not in a bright, dipped-out sense, but in a vibrant, mint-fresh sense. The motifs are sharp and frosty and the fields emit semiprooflike reflectivity. A few light abrasions are hardly noticed as the luster cartwheels around each side. Census: 60 in 63 (5 in 63+), 41 finer (6/15).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 24Z3, PCGS# 6950).

1806/4 $2.50 Stars 8x5 AU53 PCGS #7654

Heritage Auction Notes: 1806/4 8x5 Stars Quarter Eagle, AU53 BD-1, Good Luster Remaining 1806/4 $2 1/2 8x5 Stars, BD-1, High R.4, AU53 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. Only two 1806 quarter eagle varieties are known, both overdates, the 1806/4 with stars arranged eight and five, and the 1806/5 with stars seven and six. The 1806/4 is seen a bit more frequently than is the 1806/5, but both are elusive. The 1806/4 was created from an unused 1804-dated die, while the reverse, shared between the two 1806 varieties, was a reappearance of the 1805 reverse. The obverse die state is early for b, showing some but apparently not all of those listed in the Bass-Dannreuther reference. The strike is weak in the centers, but good luster remains over green-gold surfaces with an accent of reddish patina around the rims. A few horizontal planchet adjustment marks occur in the center of the reverse. Population: 3 in 53, 26 finer (3/23). Heritage Notes: 1839-C Two and Half, AU50 HM-3, Rare Early Die State 1839-C $2 1/2 HM-3, High R.4, AU50 PCGS. The rare early die state with a complete branch. Most examples of HM-3 are from a later die state with portions of the branch lapped away. The second-year Charlotte Mint quarter eagle was also the final Classic issue from the facility, and the last C-mint issue (along with the 1839-C five dollar) with an obverse mintmark. The 1839-C two and a half has a mintage of only 18,140 pieces, and AU survivors are very scarce. This original pumpkin-gold example displays light wear on the curls and wingtips. A mark is noted on the base of the F in OF, but the surfaces are otherwise minimally abraded. From The Ed Leigh McMillan Collection. Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 764874, Base PCGS# 7699) Weight: 4.18 grams Metal: 89.92% Gold, 10.08% Copper

PCGS MS63+. Stacks Description: LOT DESCRIPTION 1888 Liberty Head Half Eagle. MS-63+ (PCGS). CAC. Handsome rose-gold surfaces are fully frosted in finish with an impressively sharp strike from the dies. Perhaps not surprisingly after the facility produced no circulation strikes the preceding year, the Philadelphia Mint struck only 18,201 half eagles in this format in 1888. This is a scarce to rare issue at all levels of preservation, so much so that if more collectors were assembling date and mint sets of this series the present example in MS-63+ would almost certainly command a price well into the five-figure range. A coin that offers outstanding value for the astute gold enthusiast. PCGS Population: 3; 4 finer (MS-65 finest). PCGS# 8372. NGC ID: 25XX.

PCGS MS62. Stacks description: LOT DESCRIPTION 1888-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-62 (PCGS). Delightful rose-orange surfaces are further adorned with billowy mint frost. A smartly impressed and inviting BU example. A mintage of 859,600 double eagles was recorded for the San Francisco Mint in 1888, amounting to a face value of $17,192,000. The vast majority of these probably served extensively in the daily needs of commerce, while others were used for overseas trade or kept on reserve for the redemption of paper currency. Back in 1982, David W. Akers reported appearances of Uncirculated examples in only about 10% of the major auction sales examined by him while preparing his celebrated double eagle opus. He regarded the issue as "moderately scarce" in Mint State. In subsequent years, the number of Mint State examples increased dramatically, though they remain scarce any finer than MS-62. 1793 1C Wreath, S-11c XF40BN PCGS #35477

Stacks Notes: LOT DESCRIPTION Classic 1793 Wreath Cent Ever-Popular One Year Design Type 1793 Flowing Hair Cent. Wreath Reverse. S-11C. Rarity-3-. Lettered Edge. EF-40 (PCGS). This is a handsome, high grade circulated example of a perennially popular large cent design type. Both sides are warmly toned in copper-brown, with glints of light olive-copper evident in isolated areas. The strike is well centered and otherwise sharp for the assigned grade, the reverse border devoid of beading from 6:30 to 11 o'clock. The surface texture is satiny and generally hard, with a few minor planchet flaws concentrated in the lower left obverse field. A few wispy handling marks in the right obverse field and on the reverse around the word STATES are noted for accuracy, although the appearance is pleasingly smooth overall for a lightly circulated early copper. Breen Die State III. Copper for this variety was supplied by Greenleaf & Watson, and the planchets are apt to show laminations or other natural flaws, as evident on the obverse of the present example. Production of Sheldon-11C was intermingled with that of S-11B (Lettered Edge, Double Leaf). The reason the Mint abandoned the vine and bars edge device in favor of a lettered edge is unknown, especially since its expression ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR is another statement of the denomination, which is already given twice as part of the reverse design of the Wreath cent (ONE CENT and 1/100). From the first year of the regular issue U.S. large cent series, and a one year design type, all 1793 Wreath cents are eagerly sought. In original, attractive and problem free PCGS-certified Extremely Fine preservation, this piece is particularly desirable for type or variety purposes. Provenance: From our sale of the William L. Buxton Collection, August 2021 ANA Auction, lot 4006. PCGS# 35477. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
