1873 T$1 Chop Mark VF25 PCGS #87031

The 73-P is an extraordinarily tough coin; its scarcity trails 75-P and 78-CC but it is a solid #3. This lovely and original dove gray coin is a welcome addition.

1873-CC T$1 Chop Mark XF40 PCGS #87032

The obverse chops in the field are really neat design and perfect placement to go along with a nice crusty original skin This is a very tough date, even when not chopped. Purchased at SB Hong Kong Auction and crossed over from a NGC AU holder.

1873-S T$1 Chop Mark AU55 PCGS #87033

The 73-S is the toughest of the SF issues.. Lovely patina and killer luster for an AU coin. Ex-Blue Sofa

1874 T$1 Chop Mark N1 PCGS #87034

This coin has a noticeable wipe, particularly in the right obverse field. At the same time, this is still an attractive coin that has very high AU Details. The Philly issues are so difficult to find I'm happy to have this coin as it is often years between chopped 74-Ps showing up in public auctions. Purchased raw at the Sacramento Coin Show.

1874-CC T$1 Chop Mark AU50 PCGS #87035

CAC. This is a gorgeous example of the most commonly found chopped CC T$. Crusty original skin doesn't hide amazing luster and one perfectly placed chop. In combination with the 75-CC (type 1/1), purchased raw on eBay in ~2002 by previous owner. The grade is a mystery as this appears to be a mid-high AU coin. Ex-DDR.

1874-S T$1 Chop Mark MS63 PCGS #87036

CAC. An absolute luster bomb! A few scattered marks and a touch of a weak strike on the obverse are the only things keeping this from perfection.

1874-S T$1 Chop Mark MS63 PCGS #87036

1875-CC T$1 Type-I/I Chopmarked AU53 PCGS #517129

CAC. Original example with well placed obverse chops. Sweet coin with fantastic surfaces. Ex-DDR. Purchased at Heritage.

1875-S T$1 Chop Mark MS62 PCGS #87039

CAC. Bursting with luster and three very cool chops, a very nice example of a common type.

1875-S T$1 Chop Mark MS62 PCGS #87039

CAC. Bursting with luster and three very cool chops, a very nice example of a common type.

1875-S T$1 Type-I/I Chopmarked AU58 PCGS #517119

Nice looking semi-PL coin with a hammered strike Just a touch of high point friction and light evidence of circulation and one large, well struck chop. A solid example of a very common date. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 11- R Breaks

1875-S T$1 Type-I/II Chopmarked MS61 PCGS #517120

Nice cartwheel luster despite a dip and one interesting triton/pitchfork design chop. This coin is fairly common and is not really near near top pop but it is currently the highest variety graded type 2 reverse.

1875-S T$1 Type-I/II Chopmarked AU58 PCGS #517120

Type 1/2 Micro S - neat and very scarce variety and a really nice looking coin to boot! Heavy die polish lines on the reverse. Purchased on Instagram. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 14-Small S

1875-S/CC T$1 Chop Mark XF45 PCGS #87040

I wish the over mint mark was a bit more defined but nice color and I like the well-defined obverse chop right on Liberty. Purchased in SB World Coin auction. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 9-FS-501 RPM

1876 T$1 Chop Mark N1 PCGS #87041

This is the scarce and interesting type 1.5/2 with the flag pointing left but a 4th finger engraved. Two interesting chops on the reverse and some level of PL under the heavily-toned blue & brown patina; the P mint coins are very tough to find. Found raw in Hong Kong by @hkcolonialcoins. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 15-Transitional Type 1 Obverse

1876-CC T$1 Type-I/I Chopmarked XF45 PCGS #932057

Not only is this a very scarce type 1/1, it is the discovery coin for an unknown die marriage. Previously, the known type 1 reverse dies were normal CC, wide CC, and DDR. This reverse die matches one used on a number of 75-CCs (catalogued C-6 by Coxe). This is the only variety graded, chopped, non-DDR 1/1; the PCGS# was created 10/13/23 for this coin. Luckily, it's also an attractive coin with nice detail and some neat chops.

1876-CC T$1 Type-I/II Chopmarked AU53 PCGS #687107

CAC. Within the Carson City issues, the 76, while not quite as tough as the 73 or 77 and certainly not the 78, is much more scarce than chopped 74s and 75s. This coin has a very thick, original patina but, upon viewing under light, a significant amount of luster peeks through. I generally prefer more chops but the location and design of the one chop at the knee is nice. Purchased from GFRC.

1876-CC T$1 C-2 Small Wide CC, Chopmarked N1 PCGS #938763

76 is the most common of the wide CC trade dollars but is still a very scarce coin. A nicely circulated coin with remnants of an old cleaning still lightly evident. Purchased on HA and cracked out of a NGC holder. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 19-Small Wide CC

1876-CC T$1 FS-801, C-1.1 DDR Chopmarked AU55 PCGS #938764

CAC. The Doubled Die Reverse, while not easy to find problem free, is not tremendously scarce. It is one of the most dramatic and noticeable of all US doubled dies. This coin has nice color to go along with numerous chops and the interesting die features. Purchased raw on eBay. As of March 2024, 1 of 9 CAC approved DDR and the only chopped example. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 16-FS-801 DDR

1876-S T$1 Type-I/I, Chopmarked MS61 PCGS #813350

Clean surfaces and several well separated and defined chops. Attractive and interesting example of a very common type. Purchased at the Sacramento Coin Show.

1876-S T$1 Type-I/II, Chopmarked AU50 PCGS #609497

CAC. The 1/2 is a slightly better variety although not quite as tough as the pop report would lead one to believe (as this is the only attributed example of the variety). Couple of neat relief chops among the 6 obverse chops. There is a common but absolutely perfect chop on the reverse to go along with some fairly extensive die cracks. Purchased at HA and cracked out of a NGC AU holder.

1876-S T$1 Type-II/II, Chopmarked VF35 PCGS #594621

The 2/2 is the host coin for some interesting and very rare varieties...but this is not one of them. Still, a slightly better date with a wide variety of well defined chops, some of them quite distinctive. Purchased raw at the Fall 2023 Long Beach show.

1876-S T$1 FS-301, C-33 RPD Chopmarked N1 PCGS #938765

The RPD is a very tough variety that does not come along too often. The primary signifier is the remnant of the bottom loop of a 6 inside the loop of the 6. The details grade is marginal in my opinion; a few scattered hairlines but pretty original surfaces. An appealing circulated coin regardless of the grade. Purchased unattributed on HA in a NGC holder. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 22-FS-301 RPD

1876-S T$1 Chop Mark AU58 PCGS #87043

This coin is absolutely chiseled, has above average luster, and has nicely retoned after an old dip. It also appears to be a common date but upon closer examination is the 2/2 hub with re-punched date. The RPD is a fairly tough variety that only seems to turn up once or twice a year. Purchased unattributed on eBay. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 23-RPD + OL Break.

1877 T$1 Chop Mark VF25 PCGS #87044

The least difficult of the Philly issues. Obviously heavily circulated but I think it looks great for what it is. Really neat relief chop on the reverse field.

1877 T$1 Chop Mark XF45 PCGS #87044

CAC. Gorgeous original patina, this crusty coin has a lovely dove gray circ cam in natural light and deep color when viewed under light. I haven't encountered the style of chops very often. Purchased from Paul @ Quantum Rarities.

1877 T$1 FS-101, C-13 DDO Chopmarked AU58 PCGS #516340

CAC. The finest known chopped example of this exceedingly scarce DDO. Gorgeous original surfaces and one perfectly placed chop. Other than Rose, this coin has about the best provenance I would ever want; Ex-Crypto, Ex-DDR, Ex-Blackhawk, Ex-WTL Challenge 50 Set: Slot 28-FS 101 DDO Right Stars (w/ clashing C-18.2)

1877-CC T$1 Chop Mark AU55 PCGS #87045

CAC. Good luster and a green bean despite a gentle dip at some point and just the right amount of chops. The 77-CC is another one of the many semi-keys in the set. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 30-Clashed Dies C-5.1

1877-CC T$1 Chop Mark AU50 PCGS #87045

CAC. 77-CCs surface occasionally but certainly not as frequently as other issues. This was purchased sight unseen from a large bullion dealer; it is not terribly exciting from a chop or host coin standpoint but is a perfectly acceptable example that has very nice luster in hand for a low AU coin.

1877-S T$1 Chop Mark AU58 PCGS #87046

This is a gorgeous coin and is fully PL however it couldn't get a grade bump to MS-60 to allow for the PL designation. Like most PL silver dollars it shows its bagginess but has only a touch of high point friction keeping it AU. The light golden rim toning is a lovely accent. Purchased in SB World Coin auction.

1877-S T$1 FS-301 Chopmarked N1 PCGS #686867

This is a not exceedingly scarce RPD & RPM variety, with the RPD easily visible to the naked eye. While still an attractive coin, it likely had some sort of corrosion that was cleaned off and it then retoned, leading to the Environmental Damage label. Purchased at SB and cracked out of a NGC EF holder. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 35-FS-301 RPD/RPM

1877-S T$1 Chop Mark AU58 PCGS #87046

This is a not extraordinarily difficult DDR variety with doubling visible to those with high acuity eyesight, most pronounced on the 4 & 2. This very attractively toned piece is easily my most colorful trade dollar. One somewhat unusual relief chop adds to the beauty of this lightly handled coin. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 34-FS-802 DDR

1877-S T$1 Chop Mark AU58 PCGS #87046

1878-CC T$1 Chop Mark VF35 PCGS #87047

CAC (The only CAC approved example as of 10/23).Other than the (probably) unobtainable 75-P this is the key to the set with likely less than a dozen chopmarked examples in existence. While it's certainly not my most beautiful coin, the scarcity truly makes it something special. The last example to come up for auction was 5.5yrs before this one so this was not the time to be choosy! Purchased at Heritage. Ex-Coxe

1878-S T$1 Chop Mark XF45 PCGS #87048

CAC. Nice looking coin, nothing amazing but an original specimen with an attractive patina. I really like the funky chop above Liberty's knee. Purchased in SB World Coin auction.

1878-S T$1 FS-801 DDR Chopmarked MS62 PCGS #672869

CAC. This is a very flashy and sharp coin with immaculate detail. 4/0 for chopped 78-S, and sole top pop for the chopped doubled die reverse. Ex-WTL, Ex-Blackhawk. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 50-FS-801 DDR
