PROOF PLANCHET - Coin #1 : This is one of eight 1971-D Ikes (struck on proof planchets) that were in the middle of an original bank roll from 1971- a real, authentic, bank-wrapped roll. The entire roll was submitted to PCGS by Roger Kadlac of Kadlac Coins (Orlando, FL), and 11 came back as MS65 and 9 came back as MS66! I purchased all 8 proof planchet 71-Ds graded MS65. This is coin #1. These coins are SUPER BRILLIANT. Some have a more satiny luster, while others exhibit glossy luster. I contacted Mr. Kadlac to ask about the origin of this roll. I could tell he was an honest, straightforward guy. He purchased several rolls late last year (2017) from another seller on eBay who had acquired a hoard of Ike rolls- original, "put-away" rolls from the 1970s. The hoard came from an estate sale. The seller apparently never opened the rolls to check the contents entirely. He said there were a LOT of GEM specimens to come out of that hoard. And believe me, he knows the difference between an original roll and a "made up" roll, as he calls it. The proof, to me, is that this single roll produced 11 MS65 and 9 MS66 specimens! Who in the world would manufacture a roll like this and then sell it without showing off the coins within- especially coins of this caliber? I believe these rolls were sold as truly unsearched bank rolls.

PROOF PLANCHET - eBay Cherrypick. This specimen exhibits what is perhaps the best example (in my collection) of the proof planchet "look". In appearance, it has a subtle, almost reverse proof-like finish. It's color is stark white and the bust of Ike is especially glossy and smooth. I included angled shots using direct and indirect lighting to show its glossy appearance and absence of annealing drum "chatter." A truly remarkable example of this variety.

I bought this from Troy Weaver, who has the ALL TIME finest Ike registry set. He said his company, Mint State Modern Coins, found the Ike in a 1000 coin bag and submitted it raw. The coin has nice luster, even underneath the gold and orange toning. It may have been pressed up against folds in the bottom corner of the bag or something if it did tone while in storage. This may be plausible, given the random, chaotic toning pattern. It's one odd duck.

ex-Brian Vaile Specimen - Rare NIGHTCRAWLER Variety (DIVa - 1S2-401) - First Generation Red DIVA™ Sticker. This is a single-die variety, of which less than 50 are known (graded and raw combined)! The anomaly is a small, straight, hubbed through debris artifact next to the eagle’s left talon and directly against the olive leaf. The eagle appears to be clutching a worm, or nightcrawler. This one, however, is unique in that it also contains a struck-thru fiber anomaly starting from the rim between the "L" and "A" in DOLLAR and running through the bottom of "A" and through the middle of "R." It curls straight up at the end. SteveP commentary: Hubbed-through reverse: a linear shard of die metal slid off the eagle's left leg, and embedded near the talon, giving the appearance that the eagle is clutching a large worm. ODV with full serif R. Obverse with TDO - tripling best seen in the left serif of the R, Ike's hair, the N in the motto, and the 9. Reverse with DDR seen in AMERICA, most stars, Dollar, and olive leafs. IDDD die stage AA - the W and E a barely kissing.

"Ice Blue Monster" - This is most likely one of the "gassed" Ikes to come out of that infamous monster toned Ike hoard that came to market a few years back. Someone placed a bunch of these proof Ikes, still in OGP, in a large sack and gassed them for a time in an enclosed setting. A lot of them exhibited this characteristic bulls-eye toning with psychedelic colors. Naturally, they just don't tone this way. Rather, the toning begins on the periphery and works its way in. Rob Erzerman commentary: "At least one large trash bag of 71-s Brown packs were AT'ed somewhere in the mid-west some years ago, best guess is several hundred exist. The creator threw a handful of elemental sulfur in the bag and left the bag in his garage attic for one or two hot summers. So, you're correct, AT, gassed. I have a couple of these I bought for $30 back when Sego had a goodly number he was selling as NT (close to 10 years ago). While colors vary from one to another, the over-the-top iridescence makes them instantly recognizable. Rob"
