1838-C $5 XF40 PCGS #8177

Nice original orange-gold skin/coloration over much nicer surfaces than typically found.

1839-C $5 XF40 PCGS #8192

Ex-Richmond collection. Green-gold coloration with a light crusty patina over both obverse & reverse. Close 2nd to most sought-after C-mint HE, behind the '38-C. Mintage totaled a mere 17,205 coins. This is a better date w/an estimated 130-135 graded by NGC and PCGS in all grades. Problem-free examples are exceptionally difficult to find. Obverse normally comes with a weak/mushy strike. Sharply struck examples are very elusive. Purchased at Mar 2005 Baltimore show.

1840-C $5 XF45 PCGS #8196

Green-gold coloration over essentially mark-free surfaces. Some light mint-made roughness along obverse periphery - seems the 40-C typically comes 1 of 2 ways, either without the mint-made roughness, but with a very weak central strike, or with peripheral roughness and sharp, strong central definition. Nice, sharp strike over central elements. Winter notes this as the 2nd rarest date in the series, although I believe the '46-C is actually a bit rarer. Mintage of only 18,992 with NGC/PCGS combined population totalling only 115-120 in all grades. Purchased from ANR in Oct 2000.

1841-C $5 XF45 PCGS #8203

Green/orange-gold skin--crusty coloration over lustrous surfaces - very choice

1842-C $5 Large Date AU55 PCGS #8209

Lovely, CAC-approved example. While not as rare as its small-date counterpart, the 1842-C large-date Half Eagle is still within the top 8-10 toughest dates to locate in the Charlotte series.

1843-C $5 AU55 PCGS #8214

Just a terrific example for the date… exactly how an original AU Charlotte Half Eagle should look!

1844-C $5 XF45 PCGS #8220

Nice, original VF-30 example obtained in 1995-1996 timeframe. Upgrade EF-45 example added from Fairmont collection sale.

1846-C $5 AU58 PCGS #8227

CAC-Approved; the only one in AU-58, with only two other higher graded CAC'd examples. Satiny luster blankets both obverse & reverse with remarkable surfaces and just a hint of wear on the highest points. Most '46-C HEs come with very "chewed up" surfaces... not this one. Typical, soft strike on the reverse shield & arrow feathers.

Ex PCGS XF-45; now NGC AU-53. I think it's a solid, original AU-50.

1856-C $5 XF40 PCGS #8267

Deep, dirty green-gold coloration covering subdued lustrous surfaces, as original & crusty as they come. Was PCGS XF-40 OGH; now in NGC XF-45 (2066456-002) w/CAC approval.

1857-C $5 AU50 PCGS #8272

Wonderful color & originality.

1859-C $5 AU53 PCGS #8281

Originally in PCGS AU-53 holder, now in NGC AU-53 CAC.

1860-C $5 AU58 PCGS #8285

Unreal originality with remarkable eye appeal. A valid scarcer and highly sought-after date in the series.

1861-C $5 AU58 PCGS #8289

The "Big Daddy" of Charlotte mint coinage. The only Charlotte mint coin produced during the Civil War era before the mint’s coining operations shuttered its doors for good. Reflective mirrors with no heavy marks that are typically encountered with this particular date.
