Stacks Notes: LOT DESCRIPTION 1794 Liberty Cap Half Cent. C-8. Rarity-5. High-Relief Head. VG-8 (PCGS). CAC. Only about 35 examples are known of this elusive variety. This pleasing example displays a light milk-chocolate color overall. Unusually smooth surfaces with no apparent corrosion, only a single ancient mark is noted across Liberty's cheek extending into the right field. The coin is easily identifiable because it is from Die State IV, which has a reverse die break running from the rim through the second T in STATES and terminating in the wreath. Stacks Notes: LOT DESCRIPTION Classic 1793 Wreath Cent Ever-Popular One Year Design Type 1793 Flowing Hair Cent. Wreath Reverse. S-11C. Rarity-3-. Lettered Edge. EF-40 (PCGS). This is a handsome, high grade circulated example of a perennially popular large cent design type. Both sides are warmly toned in copper-brown, with glints of light olive-copper evident in isolated areas. The strike is well centered and otherwise sharp for the assigned grade, the reverse border devoid of beading from 6:30 to 11 o'clock. The surface texture is satiny and generally hard, with a few minor planchet flaws concentrated in the lower left obverse field. A few wispy handling marks in the right obverse field and on the reverse around the word STATES are noted for accuracy, although the appearance is pleasingly smooth overall for a lightly circulated early copper. Breen Die State III. Copper for this variety was supplied by Greenleaf & Watson, and the planchets are apt to show laminations or other natural flaws, as evident on the obverse of the present example. Production of Sheldon-11C was intermingled with that of S-11B (Lettered Edge, Double Leaf). The reason the Mint abandoned the vine and bars edge device in favor of a lettered edge is unknown, especially since its expression ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR is another statement of the denomination, which is already given twice as part of the reverse design of the Wreath cent (ONE CENT and 1/100). From the first year of the regular issue U.S. large cent series, and a one year design type, all 1793 Wreath cents are eagerly sought. As Reverse E approaches its near terminal die state, Obverse 4 exhibits a die crack from Liberty's head through Star 8, the cap and Stars 9 to 12. Another die crack starts at the rim below the left base and proceeds up through the rock into the left field. There is also a die crack from the base under Liberty's foot that moves towards the lower shield. Reverse E is nearly always seen with some levels of die cracks which eventually lead to the spectacular cobweb shaped shattered reverse. This die pair saw significant usage as evidenced by the available amount of circulated examples with varying degrees of reverse die cracks. The plate coin presents Reverse E in a very late die state. It has completely shattered leaving heavy die cracks from UN(I)TED to the wreath, then along the bottom of S(TATES OF A)MERICA. This die crack then re-enters the right wreath down to the bow knot. Coast Coin Comments: Reeded Edge. These were among the first coins struck with the new steam press installed at the Philadelphia Mint in 1836. Approximately 1200 pieces were struck. Heritage Comments: 1921 Peace Dollar, MS65+ Attractively Toned, Smooth and Lustrous 1921 $1 MS65+ PCGS. CAC. The 1921 Peace dollar is a lower mintage issue, and the only collectible high relief issue. Most examples show mushy definition on the the hair over the ear, but the present Gem is sharper than usually encountered. The golden-brown and ice-blue toning is original and attractive.
