Heritage Comments: 1796 Draped Bust Dime, AU55 First-Year Issue, JR-1 1796 10C JR-1, R.3, AU55 PCGS. Despite a 22,135-piece Guide Book mintage, the 1796 date is surprisingly available leading many researchers to believe additional 1796-dated dimes were struck in 1797. The JR-1 variety is the most available of seven 1796 die marriages. It is one of the most recognizable, too, with a large cud partially obscuring star 1 on most examples. The cud formed early on and, while often identified as a late die state, only a few 1796 JR-1 coins lack the anomaly. This Choice About Uncirculated example displays a ragged, prominent cud at the first star and a blurry, arc-like die crack curving in front of Liberty's face to the neck and shoulder. A horizontal die crack beneath the eagle's right (facing) wing confirms the middle-to-late die stage. Slight central weakness is characteristic of the later strikes. Tan-gold toning is prominent at the margins and lightens toward the centers, supported by pleasing mint luster that remains throughout the lightly abraded surfaces. Population (all 1796 varieties): 25 in 55, 85 finer (12/23). Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 236B, Variety PCGS# 38742, Base PCGS# 4461, Greysheet# 213014) Weight: 2.70 grams Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper

Sunshine Rare Coins (Easton Connecticut) Comments: 1839 O Seated Dime No Drapery F-106a Large O, Cobweb Reverse PCGS MS-65 CAC Toned Finest Known for the variety Fortin Comments on F-106a: 1839-O Variety 106a Obverse 4.2: Die Crack From Liberty's Head Through Star 12 Reverse E.2: Shattered Cobweb Reverse Obverse 4.2 Reverse E.2 Obverse Diagnostic Point(s) Reverse Diagnostic Point(s) Comments: Obverse 4 exhibits a boldly repunched Star 5 and comes fairly well struck even though the reverse die experiences severe degradation. As Reverse E approaches its near terminal die state, Obverse 4 exhibits a die crack from Liberty's head through Star 8, the cap and Stars 9 to 12. Another die crack starts at the rim below the left base and proceeds up through the rock into the left field. There is also a die crack from the base under Liberty's foot that moves towards the lower shield. Reverse E is nearly always seen with some levels of die cracks which eventually lead to the spectacular cobweb shaped shattered reverse. This die pair saw significant usage as evidenced by the available amount of circulated examples with varying degrees of reverse die cracks. The plate coin presents Reverse E in a very late die state. It has completely shattered leaving heavy die cracks from UN(I)TED to the wreath, then along the bottom of S(TATES OF A)MERICA. This die crack then re-enters the right wreath down to the bow knot. The die cracks covers the entire circumference of the reverse. Variety 106a is highly sought after in higher grades by variety specialist due to its spectacular appearance. Plate Coin: G.
