These second-year Seated Liberty quarters were saved to a slightly lesser degree than their first-year counterparts, but collectors should still be able to locate a Mint State example with some patience. Olive-gold and gunmetal-gray patina is more pronounced on the reverse than it is on the obverse. Partial luster shines through on each side. Splendid ocean-blue, plum-red, and sun-gold toning endows this lustrous and uncommonly attractive Choice Capped Bust type coin. The fields and eagle appear pristine, and the portrait displays only minor contact. The strike is good, although not complete on a few star centers. Coast Coin Comments: Reeded Edge. These were among the first coins struck with the new steam press installed at the Philadelphia Mint in 1836. Approximately 1200 pieces were struck. This is one of the better surviving examples with a solid strike, no heavy contact marks and wonderful original surfaces. A nice golden and light dove-gray core gives way to a touch of peripheral teal as well as some golden-orange in the protected areas of the design. An important piece of American numismatics. Just 8 have graded numerically finer at PCGS.
