Liberty Head $5 Gold Mintmark Set (1839-1908)

The $5 Liberty has the unique distinction of being the only U.S. denomination and type to be struck at all seven of the classic U.S. mints! Due to its exceptionally long life (69 years) the type spanned the period of the 1840s and 1850s when the great Southern mints at Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans were in operation, through the 1850s-1890s when the Western mints in San Francisco and Carson City were active, through the early 20th century when the mint in Denver began operation. Of course, throughout the entire period, the main mint in Philadelphia continued in uninterrupted service though it did not always produce the most coins in a given year. Because the $5 Liberty stands alone in having been struck at all seven mints, this set is extremely popular and makes one of the most interesting displays in the Registry.
