Sully G a.k.a. Greg Sullivan - In the later thirties, high grade red coins are plentiful and inexpensive. I don't remember the exact cost but many of these coins are definitely less than $75 and some can be had for even a lot less than that. The downside is that there isn't much to say when describing them. Besides the number and letter on the obverse, they all seem interchangeable. That is the feeling that is driving my new directive to replace at least some of these with toned examples. We'll see but it is currently just a work in progress.

West Side Knoxville - Cruising eBay one day, I came upon a seller with about 30 coins for sale. They were in older slabs and most of the coins looked very attractive. I bought a couple of them and was very pleasantly surprised. This has a lovely surface and could actually grade higher. 5/17 WVP

D. Winter - Nice if nominal 66RD. You can usually find really nice examples from the late thirties through the mid-forties. Here is one of them. 12/16 NXP

Kearney, CC - The war's collateral effect on U.S. coin mintage. Collectors have this one year where the coins composition causes them to stand apart from the rest of the issues. The war penny is generally more expensive in mint state than other war issue coins but they are readily available if you're willing to pay. The steel cents also require more care than the copper ones do since they are susceptible to rusting. The Zinc in their composition is also very reactive and if it comes in contact with air, water or other contaminants, that will cause these coins to look very unappealing. I have to confess, these steel cents are not among my favorites. 12/16 EER

Richard L McQueen a.k.a. XP808 - Another date where pretty coins can be found easily. These are the "shell case" copper cents that were used during the war. The color is a little different but they can actually turn out to be attractive. I think this one looks pretty good. 12/16 NVQ

Kantoken - Kind of a pretty coin if you like the red ones. This is a date you won't have trouble finding and in the very high grades, it remains one of the most affordable from the forties. Finding an attractive toned example would be a much bigger challenge. 12/16 WWM

Kearney CC - The S mint seems that it may have had leftover stock of "shell case" copper. The look associated with these is found beyond the time this metal was in use. This may be a coincidence but from what I'm seeing, that appears to be very possible. This has a nice appearance with an almost matte surface. 12/16 WUJ

Kearney CC - This looks absolutely like a shell case cent even though the run supposedly ended in 1945. I think the San Francisco mint simply didn't make as many coins as the other 2 mints and had leftover stock from the war metal supply. This coin has a darker look for a red but I find it interesting and am rather fond of it. 12/16 NGO

Kantoken - For the longest time I wondered if this should be replaced with a higher grade coin. since this 65RD is basically indistinguishable from a 66RD, at least to my eyes, I decided not to bother. 12/16 WZU

This is a surprisingly difficult date to find in high grades and you would spend a fortune for a 67RD. There are less than a dozen in existence at PCGS. This 65RD looks fine to me and I can't tell it from a 66RD. In fact, it is finer than some of my 66 red examples. 12/16 EVH

Kearney CC - This is a tough coin to find in 66RD. It took me two years to find one that wasn't either messed up or too expensive. I was lucky to find one this nice without having to pay over $100 6/17 IIJ

Great Collections - This is an example of waiting out Great Collections from week to week until a good buy becomes available. This was very inexpensive and even though these are common, I like having any coin rated higher than 66. 6/17 ENB

Simply Coins - So with all the coin replacing I've done, why not do better on this date? Well first of all it isn't easy to find an affordable and attractive 51-S Lincoln. Second, I haven't found a better one that isn't hundreds of dollars! Third? It has sort of become a point of honor with me that this lowly graded coin is the one. For a 65 it has a great surface. The reason it isn't a 66 is probably the big fat spot on the reverse rim. Splat! Still, this flaw is on the back and you don't see it right away so at least for now, this remains the 51-S in my collection. 12/16 NZJ

So, I think we'll let it stay and leave with the thought that all collections are a work in progress but we should also not forget our humble beginnings, those first few excited steps into our great hobby where we have little experience and so much to learn. Keeping this coin will serve to remind me of those times and even though I began humbly and in ignorance, I don't ever want to forget the overwhelming enthusiasm I felt when I took those first blind steps into a mysterious and mesmerizing world that has given me so many hours of pleasure, so much new knowledge and several great new friends. Thanks to anyone and everyone who took the time to look at these coins and read these words. 12/16 NIP
