Gerry Fortin Comments: (at The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors) 1839 Variety 104 Obverse 1.2: Polished Die, Repunched 39 Reverse D: Heavy Die Polish Lines, Die Scratch STATE(S) to Rim, Rotated Left 18 Degrees Obverse 1.2 Reverse D Reverse D - Reverse Die Polish Lines Comments: During March 2018, Gerry Fortin Rare Coins received a consignment containing an 1839 dime graded PCGS MS64. Obverse and reverse fields were prooflike with heavy die polish lines on the reverse at multiple angles. The first records of this dime appearing on the market are at the Heritage September 2015 Long Beach sale as lot 3402. During that sale, Heritage described the 1839 dime as unlisted in the Fortin web-book. Upon consignment arrival, an in hand inspection allowed the determination that this strike took place very early during the Obverse 1 and Reverse D die pairing. During the initial Variety 104 die pairing, Obverse 1 is in the same die state as previous pairing with Reverse C and exhibits considerable die cracking. There is an obvious die crack from rim through Star 2 to Liberty's hand and then down through left side of shield with a final exit point through the 3 digit to rim. Additional die crack is seen starting at rim, through foot and then along Liberty's right leg. A third die crack is noted from top of Liberty's head through Star 8 and cap. Finally, a die crack connects Stars 10 through 13. Reverse D has been heavily polished with prooflike fields and bold die polish lines that run at multiple angles through the denomination. On the plate coin, the die scratch from STATE(S) to rim is visible and validates that this polished die is Reverse D. Interestingly, the reverse die rotation is left 18 degrees as will be seen in subsequent die states for this die pairing. Please see the above enhanced image that well illustrates the die polish lines. Plate Coin: G. Sunshine Rare Coins (Easton Connecticut) Comments: 1839 O Seated Dime No Drapery F-106a Large O, Cobweb Reverse PCGS MS-65 CAC Toned Finest Known for the variety Fortin Comments on F-106a: 1839-O Variety 106a Obverse 4.2: Die Crack From Liberty's Head Through Star 12 Reverse E.2: Shattered Cobweb Reverse Obverse 4.2 Reverse E.2 Obverse Diagnostic Point(s) Reverse Diagnostic Point(s) Comments: Obverse 4 exhibits a boldly repunched Star 5 and comes fairly well struck even though the reverse die experiences severe degradation. As Reverse E approaches its near terminal die state, Obverse 4 exhibits a die crack from Liberty's head through Star 8, the cap and Stars 9 to 12. Another die crack starts at the rim below the left base and proceeds up through the rock into the left field. There is also a die crack from the base under Liberty's foot that moves towards the lower shield. Reverse E is nearly always seen with some levels of die cracks which eventually lead to the spectacular cobweb shaped shattered reverse. This die pair saw significant usage as evidenced by the available amount of circulated examples with varying degrees of reverse die cracks. The plate coin presents Reverse E in a very late die state. It has completely shattered leaving heavy die cracks from UN(I)TED to the wreath, then along the bottom of S(TATES OF A)MERICA. This die crack then re-enters the right wreath down to the bow knot. The die cracks covers the entire circumference of the reverse. Variety 106a is highly sought after in higher grades by variety specialist due to its spectacular appearance. Plate Coin: G. Upgrade from AU53 sample Heritage Notes: 1839 Seated Quarter, MS63 No Drapery, Closed Claws Reverse 1839 25C No Drapery MS63 PCGS. Briggs 2-B. Closed Claws Reverse. These second-year Seated Liberty quarters were saved to a slightly lesser degree than their first-year counterparts, but collectors should still be able to locate a Mint State example with some patience. Olive-gold and gunmetal-gray patina is more pronounced on the reverse than it is on the obverse. Partial luster shines through on each side. The impression is bold overall with a few points of softness on Liberty's head and foot. The eagle is razor-sharp by comparison. Heritage Auctions Notes: 1839 Reeded Edge Half Dollar, Fine Details Rare Small Letters Reverse, GR-1 1839 50C Small Letters, GR-1, R.7 -- Filed Rims -- PCGS Genuine. Fine Details. The 1839 GR-1 Reeded Edge half dollar is the Small Letters Guide Book key, and it is the rarest Reeded Edge variety aside from the famous 1838-O. In his Registry of Die Varieties for Reeded Edge Bust half dollars, Dick Graham writes: "As of this writing, I have verified 10 coins in all grades and conditions. Several of these coins have been discovered in the last 5 years, so it is still possible that more will surface in the future, but never enough to satisfy demand for variety and Red Book collectors." This piece displays deep gunmetal-gray patina and moderate wear, with light, scattered abrasions. A singular mark in the left obverse field between Liberty's chin and star 2 serves as a pedigree marker. PCGS notes rim filing, which prevents a numeric grade.

PCGS XF45. Heritage Auctions notes: 1839 50C No Drapery, WB-101, Die Pair 2, R.3, XF45 PCGS. This Choice XF example is one of four 1839 No Drapery die marriages, while the With Drapery variant adds another three varieties for the year. Golden-gray surfaces show light lines and tiny marks with magnification, but there are no individual marks of mentionable significance. Moderate wear on Liberty's portrait and some weakness at the reverse dentils are grade-consistent. Traces of mint luster remain in the sheltered areas. From Legend: Lot #1 Quantity1 Estimate2,000.00 - 2,500.00 USD Description THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION POPULAR FIRST YEAR ISSUE. A desirable and highly sought by date and type collectors. Far above average strike detail for the issue--with crisp hair strand delineation on Liberty’s head and full breast feathers on the eagle. Under strong magnification there are a couple of light breaks in luster and a few random contact marks, but all are commensurate with the grade. Blazing white, cartwheel luster. Two major varieties of 1839 dated halves were coined. The first was Without Drapery at the elbow and they were minted only in 1839 and are considered quite scarce. The other was With Drapery at the elbow (such as this coin) and they were coined from 1839 through 1852. Although a more common example, they are still difficult to come by in higher mint state grades. PCGS 12, NGC 15. A mere 44 coins grade finer. Listed in the PCGS Price Guide for $2,600. The last example to trade at auction was in October 2016 and it fetched $2,233. With the demand for white Seated halves as strong as it is, we anticipate this high end piece will fetch a handsome price! Cert. Number 35409453 PCGS # 6232.00

The second-year Charlotte Mint quarter eagle was also the final Classic issue from the facility, and the last C-mint issue (along with the 1839-C five dollar) with an obverse mintmark. The 1839-C two and a half has a mintage of only 18,140 pieces, and AU survivors are very scarce. This original pumpkin-gold example displays light wear on the curls and wingtips. A mark is noted on the base of the F in OF, but the surfaces are otherwise minimally abraded. From The Ed Leigh McMillan Collection.
