Sharply struck with only a few trivial marks. The notable ones are a tiny planchet chip on the truncation near the tip of the curl and a tiny nick on the coronet over the I. Gerry Fortin Comments: (at The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors) 1839 Variety 104 Obverse 1.2: Polished Die, Repunched 39 Reverse D: Heavy Die Polish Lines, Die Scratch STATE(S) to Rim, Rotated Left 18 Degrees Obverse 1.2 Reverse D Reverse D - Reverse Die Polish Lines Comments: During March 2018, Gerry Fortin Rare Coins received a consignment containing an 1839 dime graded PCGS MS64. Obverse and reverse fields were prooflike with heavy die polish lines on the reverse at multiple angles. The first records of this dime appearing on the market are at the Heritage September 2015 Long Beach sale as lot 3402. During that sale, Heritage described the 1839 dime as unlisted in the Fortin web-book. Upon consignment arrival, an in hand inspection allowed the determination that this strike took place very early during the Obverse 1 and Reverse D die pairing. During the initial Variety 104 die pairing, Obverse 1 is in the same die state as previous pairing with Reverse C and exhibits considerable die cracking. There is an obvious die crack from rim through Star 2 to Liberty's hand and then down through left side of shield with a final exit point through the 3 digit to rim. Additional die crack is seen starting at rim, through foot and then along Liberty's right leg. A third die crack is noted from top of Liberty's head through Star 8 and cap. Finally, a die crack connects Stars 10 through 13. Reverse D has been heavily polished with prooflike fields and bold die polish lines that run at multiple angles through the denomination. On the plate coin, the die scratch from STATE(S) to rim is visible and validates that this polished die is Reverse D. Interestingly, the reverse die rotation is left 18 degrees as will be seen in subsequent die states for this die pairing. Upgrade from AU53 sample Heritage Notes: 1839 Seated Quarter, MS63 No Drapery, Closed Claws Reverse 1839 25C No Drapery MS63 PCGS. Briggs 2-B. Closed Claws Reverse. These second-year Seated Liberty quarters were saved to a slightly lesser degree than their first-year counterparts, but collectors should still be able to locate a Mint State example with some patience. Olive-gold and gunmetal-gray patina is more pronounced on the reverse than it is on the obverse. Partial luster shines through on each side. The impression is bold overall with a few points of softness on Liberty's head and foot. The eagle is razor-sharp by comparison. Far above average strike detail for the issue--with crisp hair strand delineation on Liberty’s head and full breast feathers on the eagle. Under strong magnification there are a couple of light breaks in luster and a few random contact marks, but all are commensurate with the grade. Blazing white, cartwheel luster. Two major varieties of 1839 dated halves were coined. The first was Without Drapery at the elbow and they were minted only in 1839 and are considered quite scarce. The other was With Drapery at the elbow (such as this coin) and they were coined from 1839 through 1852. Although a more common example, they are still difficult to come by in higher mint state grades. PCGS 12, NGC 15. A mere 44 coins grade finer. Listed in the PCGS Price Guide for $2,600. The last example to trade at auction was in October 2016 and it fetched $2,233. Heritage Notes: 1839-C Two and Half, AU50 HM-3, Rare Early Die State 1839-C $2 1/2 HM-3, High R.4, AU50 PCGS. The rare early die state with a complete branch. Most examples of HM-3 are from a later die state with portions of the branch lapped away. The second-year Charlotte Mint quarter eagle was also the final Classic issue from the facility, and the last C-mint issue (along with the 1839-C five dollar) with an obverse mintmark. The 1839-C two and a half has a mintage of only 18,140 pieces, and AU survivors are very scarce. This original pumpkin-gold example displays light wear on the curls and wingtips. From a small mintage of 17,205 pieces, the 1839-C is the only Liberty half eagle from the Charlotte Mint that features a prominent obverse mintmark, an important consideration for type purposes. This attractive Choice XF specimen exhibits only light wear on the well-detailed design elements. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded, but several minor rim dings are evident on both sides.
