1798 S-184 R1 Style II Hair, Small 8. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown.Lustrous medium steel brown and olive with lighter steel brown toning in some of the protected areas. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint frost and this cent has great eye appeal. Looks mint state and there is no circulation wear, but traces of very shallow reddish brown crud can be found around the bottom of the obverse. The only contact mark is a dull rim nick over the R in LIBERTY; the reverse is flawless. M-LDS, Breen state III, with a faint diagonal die crack in the field before the face and several microscopic lumps of die rust in the obverse fields. The die clashmarks on the reverse are strong. In addition there is fine but clear doubling from the tip of the nose down to the bottom of the neck plus sharp doubling on ONE CENT and the lower part of the wreath (machine doubling, not a doubled die). Graded AU50 net EF40 and tied for CC#11 in the Noyes census (rather harsh in our opinion), his photo #59763.2. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#7 in his census. Our grade is net AU50. This was Nancy's first large cent. The attribution and Nancy & Bryan Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4, none finer.(PCGS # 36119) Value $5,500 - UP
