- Vividly Toned Gem 1876 Twenty-Cent Piece
1876 Twenty-Cent Piece. BF-2. Rarity-2. MS-66 * (NGC).
Splashed with mottled multicolored iridescence in shades of red and blue, it is little wonder why NGC saw this coin as having superior eye appeal at the MS-66 grade level. Silky smooth satin luster is also worthy of praise, as is razor sharp striking detail that extends to even the most intricate design elements. Introduced only the year before, by 1876 the writing was already on the wall for the twenty-cent piece. Never popular due its similarity in size and design to the contemporary Liberty Seated quarter, the final circulation strikes were produced in 1876 at the Philadelphia and Carson City mints. With fewer than 20 examples known, the 1876-CC is a legendary numismatic rarity that is unobtainable for most collectors. The 1876 is collectible, although with just 14,640 pieces produced it is the lowest mintage and rarest circulation strike of the type after only the 1876-CC. Elusive and underrated in all grades, the 1876 is particularly rare in Gem Mint State, as here. A coin for the connoisseur, and sure to sell for a premium bid.
NGC Census: 16; only two of which have received a * designation for superior eye appeal; 4 finer (MS-67 finest).
PCGS# 5299. NGC ID: 23R8.
