POLAND. Gold Medallic 5 Ducats, ND (1669). Michal Korybut. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, Unc Details.
H-Cz-2386 (R6); Raczynski-162. Weight: 17.21 gms. Obverse: Laureate, armored, and mantled bust of Michal Korybut right; Reverse: Globe floating upon a clamshell, eagle with outspread wings perched atop; holds holding sword and scepter that rise to meet a crown above the eagle; radiant glory of the divine above, represented by the Tetragrammaton. A medal produced for the coronation of Michal Korybut in 1669, these pieces were apocryphally produced for participants in the coronation ceremonies, with this design being far more abundant in silver. Scoring high marks for RARITY, we were only able to trace three examples of this type in gold trading in the past decade.
The noted scratch is seen in right field on the obverse, with displaced metal leaving some bright streaks, though this are somewhat masked by the general friction that is present. The details remain glorious, with no evidence of rub or drawdown, an elusive trait given the age of this example. Bright luster is still present, with a sheen of exceeding attractivity glistening throughout. A lovely medal, and a piece that would serve any collector of Polish Gold, or Coronation medals more generally, well.
Estimate: $60,000 - $100,000.
Provenance: From the Anthony J. Taraszka Collection.
Ex: Swiss Banking Corporation 43 (09/1997) Lot #1372.
