- 1854 Experimental Cent. Judd-159A, Pollock-186. Rarity-7+. Proof-64 BN (PCGS). PCGS has certified this coin as an example of Judd-159, but the coin #11654 on the insert corresponds to Judd-159A. The latter attribution is probably correct as most examples of this type are electrotypes (Judd-159A) produced in the Mint as opposed to struck coins (Judd-159).
The obverse exhibits the familiar Seated Liberty design used on regular issue United States silver coins through most of the 19th century. Thirteen stars are arranged around the border and the date 1854 is below. The reverse exhibits the denomination 1 CENT within a wreath of oak leaves and acorns. Struck in copper with a plain edge.
This is an experimental issue as opposed to a pattern as it was struck to test proposed changes to the diameter and thickness of the Cent instead of illustrating a new design. Boldly struck on the reverse, the obverse is overall softer in detail with most of the lathe lines (as made) on the portrait still visible. Copper-brown in tone, with no significant blemishes to report. One of only about a dozen examples of Judd-159A
