- 1870 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-933, Pollock-1039. Rarity-7. Proof-66 (NGC). One of the finest known examples of this issue, the surfaces are spectacular with rich lilac, lavender and blue toning right to the frosty centers. The strike is bold and without a hint of weakness. As to the surfaces, the grade speaks volumes as to the quality as the devices and fields are virtually pristine. The obverse design Liberty seated facing left, her right hand resting on the top of a shield, pole with cap behind, her right arm holds a branch of laurel. Thirteen stars surround, the date is below. On the reverse this is the regular dies of the half dollar of this year used for circulation strikes. PCGS has not graded any finer than PR-65, so apparently tied for the finest known with one other. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
