THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION, PART IV Ex Eliasberg Collection, as noted on the insert. A totally original and totally CHOICE example with an extensive pedigree that dates back to 1907. The 1866-S No Motto is one of the rarest dates in the series, especially in Mint State grades; while graded "only" MS63, there are just two examples graded higher at PCGS. Only 60,000 No Motto examples were coined before the new dies with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST arrived in San Francisco in March 1866. Two die pairs were used, this one with the mintmark "S" small and thin. listed as WB-101. Richly toned in a warm slate-gray with glinting accents of champagne-gold and lilac-pewter which is enlivened by a glowing underlying satin frost. Sharply impressed from an unclashed state of the dies, the surfaces are very impressively clean, devoid of distracting marks. VERY RARE so fine, at the time of the Eliasberg sale, this coin was "among the top two or three finest" known; today, 25 years later, this coin is ranked as tied for third finest at PCGS, with just two graded higher at that service. The most recent example of this grade to sell realized $14,688 over half a decade ago in July 2016; today the PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $20,000 and the CAC CPG value is $19,200. If you seek a higher grade example your choices are few and very pricey: just two have graded finer: the Gardner-Boylston MS66+ that we sold for $73,438 in October 2021 and the Newman-Simpson MS67+ that sold for $156,000 in January 2021.
