- 1877 Trade Dollar. Proof-66+ Cameo (PCGS). CAC. Here is the finest coin graded in the Cameo category, and finer than any Deep Cameo examples seen by PCGS by a full grade point +, as the finest seen in that category are PR-65. Toned with light copper-gold accents over the entire surface with watery fields that have no disturbances of any consequence, and the frost on the devices is unbroken and intact. Slight repunching on 87 low as usually seen on these proofs. Mintage for the year is believed to be 510 pieces, with the present coin arguably the finest to show the Cameo contrast and technically most desirable. A single non-cameo coin exceeds the technical grade here, that a PR-67 example noted in the PCGS Population Report. Suitable for the most advanced collection.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
Desirability comes to the forefront. If you are in the PCGS registry competition here is the opportunity to hit a home run. Proof trade dollars of this year are exceedingly rare at this level, as the population figures attest. Purchased from Stack’s years ago, in the 1950s or early 1960s. We can imagine a member of the Teich family visiting our gallery at 123 West 57th Street, having a pleasant chat, and perhaps being the first offered this Gem from a newly-acquired collection.
