- 1760 Hibernia-Voce Populi Halfpenny. Zelinka 14-M, Nelson-13, W-13960. Rarity-4. P Below Bust. AU-50.
144.8 grains. Positively choice chocolate brown with outstanding eye appeal. Aside from a mint-made straight clip at the left side of the obverse, it is essentially impossible to find a fault with this coin: the color, surface, sharpness, and originality are all outstanding, and we see no marks of consequence. This is nicer than the Ryder-Boyd coin, earlier ex: George Earle, 1912, not quite as fine as the Norweb or 1995 C4 coins, similar to the Zelinka and McGrath specimens. The reverse cracks are impressive, with parallel arcs from the last two date digits to the rim at top. The left crack is the stronger one, leaving the reverse on two different planes. The P under Bust type is a major variety in the series, one that is rarely found so fine. Bob Vlack's envelope for this coin notes that the "variety [was] unknown to Nelson" and points out its "Choice Condition."
PCGS# 268.
Provenance: From the Ted L. Craige Collection. Purchased from Bob Vlack; paper envelope included.
