- "1799" (ca. 1862) Washington Portrait Pater Patriae / Washington Portrait Born and Died. Fuld-113/114A a, Musante GW-342, Baker-95A. Rarity-8. Copper. Plain Edge. MS-62 BN (NGC).
21 mm. This is an exceptionally attractive example of an elusive and highly desirable type. It offers outstanding visual appeal and seems conservatively graded at the NGC MS-62 BN level. Both sides are toned throughout, featuring dominant golden-copper patina enhanced by blushes of iridescent cobalt blue. The surfaces are fully lustrous with softly frosted design elements that give way to modest semi-reflectivity in the fields. Wispy handling marks are noted, especially in the reverse field. With such extraordinary eye appeal we would not have been surprised if this piece had received a Choice Mint State rating from NGC. A significant rarity in both the Patriotic Civil War token and Washingtoniana series, we have seen very few examples of this die pairing over the years. A spotted copper example brought $600 in our November 2017 Baltimore Auction, while a high grade copper piece (NGC MS-65 RB) realized $2,760 in our (Stack's) January 2007 Americana Sale. Premium quality for the assigned grade, the present example is worthy of very strong bids.
Provenance: From the Sherwood Collection.
