- The 1878 Proof quarter eagle is an interesting issue. The recorded mintage was only 20 pieces, delivered on February 8th or 9th, 1878. What makes this interesting is that there were two reverse dies employed to produce the issue, suggesting that at some point an old reverse (from 1868) was pressed into service and an unknown, but small number of additional coins were struck. This coin was struck from that second group, a Rarity-7- die pairing known as JD-2. This die pair seems to be the more "common" of the two, with eight examples enumerated by John Dannreuther (vs. two for JD-1). That said, the 1878 Proof quarter eagle is much less frequently encountered than the 1863 Proof only rarity or the 1875 quarter eagle. This is the ONLY PCGS-graded coin in the CAM designation. The surfaces show rich orange gold highlights surrounding the peripheries on both sides. A bold mirrored reflection and orange-peal finish in the fields contrast nicely against the richly frosted, razor sharp devices. The Cameo contrast is captivating and eye arresting; the initial appearance is fully CHOICE! PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. This is a UNIQUE opportunity for the collector. Realize just how RARE this issue is. PCGS has graded just nine in all grades and designations. This coin sold for $18,600 nearly four years ago and the current PCGS Price Guide value is $23,500. Who knows when you will have another opportunity to acquire another 1878 quarter eagle, so do not let this one pass you by! Good luck! Cert. Number 82240549 PCGS # 87904
