FROM THE M & S PETTY COLLECTION A great example! Nearly of GEM quality and RARE so fine! Struck at the very height of the Civil War, only 27,200 were produced, and many were hoarded as the government suspended specie payments until after the war; once payments resumed, those hoarded silver coins made their way back into commercial channels and did not survive in high grade, including export to Latin America. Today, Proof examples are much more frequently encountered than high-grade Uncs. Visually quite fetching, this VERY CHOICE example is wholly original and attractively toned in a rich melange of iridescent blue, lavender, and russet-gold. The underlying satiny luster really makes the colors pop in a light. The surfaces show some hidden ticks and light contact, nothing serious that puts a negative impact on the outstanding visual allure. Truly one of the prettier examples of this date we have handled in auction. Ex L.K. Rudolf Collection, Stack's May 2003, lot 2125; purchased privately from Gold Rush Galleries. PCGS 15, NGC 22, CAC 6. The most recent PCGS/CAC MS64 to sell was the BigMo Collection coin we sold in July 2020 for $15,863. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $18,000 and the CAC CPG value is $15,000. Fewer than a dozen are graded finer at PCGS, and this beautifully toned GEM is high end and worthy of another WORLD CLASS cabinet! Good luck. Cert. Number 21847375 PCGS # 6953
