- Undated (1851) Pattern Cent. Judd-127, Pollock-149. Rarity-6-. Billon. Plain Edge. Proof-64 (PCGS). Obv: This is one of the perforated cent patterns, with a large central hole with a raised internal lip around it, in the area left is an open laurel wreath with no fruit and with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding. Rev: At the top is CENT flanked by ONE TENTH SILVER with the only other ornamentation being a plain raised ring below the lettering and near the inner hole and raised lip. These experimental pieces were an attempt to replace the Large cents then in circulation. It was thought that a coin with some precious metal like silver, might be small enough--yet valuable enough--to circulate in place of the heavy copper cents. No doubt the perforation made these planchets difficult to consistently manufacture, and these were not adopted, but notice the fact that the size of the present pattern coin is similar to that of the later adopted 1857 Flying Eagle cents in diamter. Sometimes incremental steps must be taken, and this is one of the first toward the "small cent" design still in use today.
