- "1797" (ca. 1879) Sansom Medal. Large Format, Third Dies. Copper. 46 mm. Musante GW-60A, Baker-73. MS-66 BN (NGC). This richly and evenly toned example is bathed in bold antique copper patina. The surfaces are sharply struck, satiny in texture and exceptionally smooth to uphold the validity of the impressive premium Gem grade from NGC. Struck from a larger set of dies than both the original and restrike Sansom medals (Musante GW-58 and GW-59), the bust and pedestal hubs are the same, but the letter punches were also a bit larger than those seen on the smaller format pieces. Per Musante (2016), these dies are attributed to someone named Richardson, possibly John Richardson, son of the second chief assayer of the United States Mint. Scarce in an absolute sense, and undeniably rare with the quality offered here. Click here for certification details from NGC.
