- THE B.S.T. COLLECTION Ex Dan Holmes Collection, as noted on the insert. Legend is proud to offer this tied for FINEST CERTIFIED 1798 Large Cent. Regardless of die marriage, this coin ranks as the sole MS65 RB at either service for the 2nd Hair Style type. This is a truly memorable example that ranks high up on all the censuses: Noyes, Del Bland, and Bob Grellman list this one as #2; PCGS #1. The provenance goes back to the late 1800s and has graced some of the FINEST large cent cabinets ever assembled! Nicely struck from Noyes Die State B, Breen Die State II, which is an advanced but not terminal state for this die pair with extensive die cracks on the obverse: tops of LIBER; from the rim at 9:00 to the highest hair curl; at Liberty's bust line to the lower drapery folds. The details are generally well struck for the type. The surfaces are extremely CHOICE for an early large cent regardless of the grade. The surfaces are particularly smooth, hard, and free of flaws. A bold mint luster radiates along both sides of this GEM highlighting faded golden-red color that has wonderful soft brown patina. There are some accents of soft blue overtones that pop when rotated in a light, and some darker toning spots on the reverse. The eye appeal of this exceptional coin is very high end. M. A. Brown; S. The only recent auction comps are the MS64 BN CAC S-186 that brought $57,600 in January 2022 and the PCGS MS65 + BN CAC that brought $69,000 in March 2020. Today the PCGS Price Guide in MS65 RB is listed at $150,000. We expect this coin will bring very strong action when it crosses the block. It belongs in the FINEST of Large Cents. Do not let this one get away Cert. Number 13666686 PCGS # 36111
