- FRANCE. Peace of Pressburg/Napoleon I Bronze Medal, 1805. PCGS SPECIMEN-63.
Bramsen-455; Pax in Nummis-740; Julius-1463; Zeitz-63. By Andrieu and Denon. Obverse: Laureate head right; Reverse: Temple of Janus, with doors closed. Even brown surfaces, with a few scattered marks and a charming overall appearance.
The treaty at Pressburg saw an Austrian withdrawal from the Napoleonic wars and also foreshadowed the downfall of the Holy Roman Empire--eventually being replaced by the much smaller and less influential Austrian Empire. The Temple of Janus dates back to antiquity, when it was utilized by the Romans to indicate the status of warfare. If the doors were open, Rome was currently at war; similarly, if they were closed, Rome was currently at peace--an event usually deserving of celebration.
Estimate: $75 - $150.
