- Superb Mid-Grade 1785 RR-2 Vermont Copper
Late Die State
1785 Vermont Copper. Landscape. RR-2, Bressett 1-A, W-2005. Rarity-3. VERMONTS. VF-25 (PCGS).
126.3 grains. A second example of this popular and significant die pairing from our consignor, and a late die state in contrast to the early die state PCGS VF-25 offered above. Beautiful glossy light brown surfaces are free of granularity or serious defects and a joy to behold. The strike is a bit inconsistent, as nearly always seen, with the word PUBLICA much bolder than VERMONTS, though the letters NTS are nice and clear. On the reverse, the word DECIMA is mostly obscured, through STELLA QUARTA is crisp. The centers are bold on both sides, though the prominent die break at the base of the obverse affects the plow and the area above. The date is bold, as is the all-seeing eye. A couple of insignificant planchet fissures are seen in the area of soft striking at the word DECIMA. A subtle spot of mahogany toning, not raised corrosion but only color, is noted above the digit 1 in the date, as is a smaller one barely right of the digit 5. The overall aesthetic appeal is superb for the assigned grade, far nicer than usual, in fact. If more collectors had a chance to buy Vermonts that looked like this, more people would want to collect Vermonts! A really charming mid-grade example of the VERMONTS Guide Bookvariety, and an excellent coin to represent the late die state of the RR-2 pairing.
Provenance: From our (Stack's) Henry Leon Sale, May 2007, lot 378. Lot tag, clipped lot description, and collector envelope with attribution and provenance notes included.
