- Prized Rarity 1847 Gem Proof Seated Quarter
1847 Liberty Seated Quarter. Proof-65 (PCGS).
An exceptionally rare coin in any grade of Proof, and one of the very finest seen at this Gem level. Toned with classic lilac-gray which flashes to lemon and green iridescence when examined under a light, with both sides evenly toned and well matched. The strike is precise and sharp throughout, including a partial fin or wire rim, and with the desired "presence" that a Proof coin of this era has in spades. No surface marks or nicks merit attention, and the delicate mirror fields are intact from minimal handling through the generations. It is estimated that between five and eight Proofs exist of this date, with this tied with one other noted in the PCGS Population Reportas the finest they have seen. These early Proof coins from the 1840s are incredibly rare and highly collectible when they appear in the market.
Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
In this era silver coins were sold in sets containing one each from the half dime to the silver dollar. Copper cents and half cents were sometimes sold with silver sets, but it seems that more often they were distributed on their own. Gold coins were not collected by many and were done individually. The present 1847 Proof quarter will be a great addition to a connoisseur’s cabinet.
PCGS# 5541.
PCGS Population: 2; none finer.
