- This is an incredible Proof Gold Dollar! WOW! What a great looking GEM example! The mint records show that 154 Proof gold dollars were struck in 1860, although it is believed that many were not distributed at the time of mintage. PCGS CoinFacts estimate that a total of 37 examples survive today in all grades and designations with 11 in 65 or finer grades. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth observed when they penned their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, that a very similar number of 1859 Proof gold dollars (mintage 80) sold in the period of time as the 1860, suggesting similar numbers of survivors. This is a very cool date for collectors to think about including in a Proof Gold Type Set; consider that all the mintages of gold dollars prior were unrecorded until 1859 and no doubt well under 50. During the Civil War, mintages again dropped to double digits and did not recover until the 1880s. This date is not one of the lower mintage rarities, nor is it one of the ultra common late dates. Deep, golden mirrors beam from all over with superb clear reflection. Sharply struck and highly frosted throughout the devices. Some minor, mint made planchet flakes are noted, as are a few microscopic lint marks. A couple of teeny ticks on Liberty's portrait are noted for full disclosure, but really do not detract from the SUPERB overall eye appeal. PCGS 4, NGC 4, CAC 5. This is the ONLY PR65+ CAM graded by PCGS. This beautiful coin sold for $25,850 in our January 2018 Regency Auction 25. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $30,000 and with just two finer in the CAM designation, both PR66 CAM, this impressive coin will fit nicely in any AMAZING set of Proof gold dollars. Cert.
