- 1863 Pattern Dollar. Judd-346, Pollock-418. Rarity-7. Proof-65 RB (PCGS). A prohibitively rare pattern issue with perhaps 6 to 10 known, this clearly one of the finer examples as the surfaces retain considerable mint color and the level of quality is that of a full Gem. The mirror fields glisten with a hint of iridescence while the frosted devices show the fine etching produced by the die surface that creates the frost on the coins struck. A small unpolished area is noted below Liberty's chin, where the frost continues into what should be the polished field, other areas have this feature too and this minor fact serves to help identify which dies were used to coin these Proofs. For future identification there are two minor specks, one located on the shield of the obverse, just below Liberty's finger, the other on the reverse between NI of UNITED. Tied with two others as the finest seen by PCGS and a highly desirable Pattern issue.<br /> The addition of the Motto IN GOD WE TRUST became a possibility when a small town preacher named M. R. Watkinson of Ridleyville, PA wrote to Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase on November 13, 1861 that a religious motto should be added to our coinage. Chase agreed with this concept and the Philadelphia Mint initially tried the Motto "GOD OUR TRUST" and this seen on various Pattern issues of this period. Chase modified this a bit to IN GOD WE TRUST and this Motto became law in 1864, first appearing on the new Two-Cent Piece. This 1863 Copper Pattern Dollar also sports the new Motto, placed on a ribbon precisely as it was later adopted in 1866 on the Seated Dollar series. These early appearances of the Motto are not only rare, but quite historic and desirable.
