- 1915 Indian Half Eagle. JD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-5. Proof-61 (NGC).
Much of the rich honey-orange color for which this issue is known remains on both sides of this lightly handled Proof. Close inspection with a loupe also allows ready appreciation of the fine-grain sandblast finish, especially within the deepest recesses of the central design elements. There are no individually mentionable marks, and the eye appeal is superior for the assigned grade. This is the final issue in the United States Mint's Proof half eagle series. By 1915, contemporary collectors had become thoroughly disenchanted with the Satin and Sandblast Proofs that the Mint produced of the Indian design type, which fact is reflected both in the limited mintage of 75 pieces and the scarcity of survivors (Dannreuther, 2018: just 45 to 55 coins in all grades) for this issue. A fleeting bidding opportunity for the advanced gold enthusiast that is worthy of serious consideration.
PCGS# 8546. NGC ID: 28E9.
