- ITALY. Kingdom (Napoleonic). 40 Lire, 1814-M. Milan Mint. Napoleon I of France. PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield. Fr-5; KM-12. Variety with "puntali sagomati". This great example does exhibit some minor use in circulation, through light wear and some scattered marks on the rims, but nevertheless still retains a good deal of shimmering luster remaining in the protected areas. The "puntali" refer to the spearhead ends of the battleaxes on the reverse. One variety (as here) presents them as wider blades, while the "aguzzi" variety presents them instead as much thinner points. Estimate: $700 - $1,000. Provenance: From the Naples Bay Collection.
