- KARL GOETZ MEDALS. Germany. 250th Anniversary of the Birth of Johann Sebastian Bach Silver Medal, 1935. Munich Mint. PCGS MATTE SPECIMEN-65 Gold Shield.
Kienast-503. 36mm. By Karl Goetz. Obverse: Bust of Bach right; Reverse: Organ between eagle and praying angel, both radiant and facing one another. Tied with just one other example as the finest graded in the PCGS census, this sublime Gem offers charming gunmetal gray surfaces with some deeper hues accentuating the devices throughout.
Generally regarded as one of the greatest composers in history, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was born in the German Duchy of Sachsen-Eisenach to a family of musicians. Though recognized now for works such as The Brandenburg Concertos, The Goldberg Variations, and the St Matthew Passion, as well as hundreds of cantatas both secular and sacred, he was best known in his time for his abilities as an organist-as is alluded to by the reverse design of this medal.
Estimate: $100 - $200.
Provenance: From the Richard Jewell Collection.
