- A solid Condition Census O-124, considered to be R-5. For a Flowing Hair half dollar, the central strike is very strong. Liberty’s flowing locks were likely fully struck up before being placed into circulation. The reverse is also very crisp and the eagle’s breast does show some hints of feather detail, and the neck and wings are boldly separated. A light luster, especially in the protected devices on the reverse provides a soft contrast. The planchet must have been very heavy before striking, as there are numerous adjustment marks where mint workers filed down a heavy planchet to bring it into tolerable weight range. A couple of tiny marks are noted, hidden among the mint made adjustments. Pewter, olive, dove, gold, tan, and slate-blue blend to create a bold visual allure. PCGS 24, NGC 12 (for the date). This coin last appeared as an NGC AU50 in the 2012 pre-ANA auction, selling for $9,988. A more common variety, an O-109, was the most recent 2 Leaves 1795 in PCGS AU50 to sell, realizing $16,450 in September 2013. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $15,000. For anyone building an early silver type set, this lovely AU coin would make a great representative of the type. These do not appear with any frequency, and do not generally have as bold a visual appeal. We anticipate the estimate getting blown by when this coin is sold.
