- GREAT BRITAIN. Coronation of James II & Mary Silver Medal, ND (1685). James II (1685-88). PCGS AU-50 Secure Holder.
34 mm; 15.56 gms. cf.Eimer-273/4; MI-I, 606/8. By J. Roettier. Laureate, armored draped bust of James II right; Reverse: Laureate draped bust of Mary right. A medal formed from a muling of the two obverse dies of the official coronation medals. Some rim cuds are present which would indicate these double headed medals were probably struck from dies which were already retired from the official strikings or possibly after the official minting had been completed. With that said there does seem to be die wear to the actual devices and the flattening of some of the high points is due to this die state and not actual wear. Hence this piece could be considered rather conservatively graded and is quite nice and attractive. Much original luster still swirling around the devices and legends under light gunmetal and golden orange toning.
Estimate: $500 - $700.
Provenance: From the Michael Druck Collection.
PCGS #616425.
