- 1783 John Chalmers Shilling. W-1785. Rarity-4+. Birds, Short Worm. Fine-15 (NGC). A noteworthy offering for the scarce Short Worm variant of John Chalmers' Birds type shilling. Wonderfully original in blended dove and medium rose-gray patina, both sides are otherwise uniformly bold in detail with just a bit of uneven wear to the central reverse. The strike is also off center, as often noted for examples of this type, and it is drawn toward the lower right on the obverse, upper right on the reverse. On neither side, however, are any of the peripheral devices significantly affected by the less-than-perfect centering. The surfaces are generally smooth for a Chalmers silver coin that saw this extensive circulation, although accuracy compels us to mention a small dig and some faint pin scratches in and around the center on the reverse. With much to offer the advanced collector, this handsome piece is sure to elicit strong bids from multiple bidders. NGC has mounted this coin with the reverse (birds side) up in the holder.
