A lovely BD-4. Every 1803-dated half eagle was struck from a previously engraved 1802 die that was then punched with a 3 creating the popular overdate. The BD-4 features a "perfect T" in LIBERTY. The present example was struck from the later state of the dies with a number of advanced die cracks seen on both sides. A total of 33,506 were reported struck in 1803, and John Dannreuther estimates that of that number, about 6,000-9,000 were from this die pair, of which, 125-175 survive today. This is a truly CHOICE example. A boldly lustrous example that has a warm, honey-yellow, orange tinged golden color. Sharply struck up, the devices are bold, including the underlying 2. Some subtle traces of contact account for the assigned grade, but the overall eye appeal and quality is very high end in comparison to what is typically seen for the MS62 level. PCGS 61, NGC 43, CAC 17. The most recent example to sell realized $24,000 in May 2022 and prior to that, the last one sold in May 2016. The PCGS Price Guide value is $25,000 and the CAC CPG value is $27,600. A very pleasing example that should see very strong bidding when it crosses the block. Good luck. Cert.
