- THE SAN DIEGO COLLECTION A gorgeous example of the final year of the lettered edge half dollar type. The present near-GEM is a Condition Census example of this scarce die marriage. The earlier die state is considered to be Rarity-4+, the later "a" die state is more common but is still a moderately scarce Rarity-3. Beautiful blue and gold toning combine on both sides of this boldly lustrous example giving it a great look. The surfaces are clean and the strike is crisp. One of this cataloger's favorite coins in this collection, we have no doubt that you will love it too! Creating devices on the edges of coins was both an anticounterfeiting and anti-fraud measure. When the second Philadelphia mint opened in 1833, and in 1836, new state of the art steam presses were installed to strike half dollars. The new presses allowed for closed collars, which eliminated the need to the castaising machine which in essence was a third die that imparted the edge device. The close collar could be plain or reeded and as the planchets expanded when struck the edges would be able to be reeded. This made production more efficient and brought to an end the John Reich- William Kneass design types and introduced Christian Gobrecht's modified Capped Bust design that would serve as a transitional type between 1836 and 1839 when the Seated Liberty design was introduced on the denomination. Ex Dale Friend Collection, via private sale, to our consignor. PCGS 7, NGC 1. The only one to sell was the NGC-coin, ex Col. Green-E.P. Newman Coin, that brought $8,813 in November 2013. The PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $6,500. Quite challenging any finer, this is a wonderful example to conclude your set of Lettered Edge halves. Good luck. Cert. Number 46263218 PCGS # 39942
