- KARL GOETZ MEDALS. Austria - Germany. The Holy German Reich Silver Medal, 1938. Munich Mint. PCGS MATTE SPECIMEN-63 Gold Shield.
Kienast-546. 36mm. By Karl Goetz. Obverse: Germania (personification of Germany) seated facing, holding sword and inverted scythe; eagle atop shield bearing swastika to left and right; Reverse: Coats-of-arms representing various German and Austrian realms. A choice example offering pleasing gunmetal gray surfaces and lighter, lustrous devices.
Following the German annexation of Austria in 1938, the idea of a Holy German Reich--a quasi reprisal of the Holy Roman Empire--was at the forefront of Hitler's mind, and acted as a way to further unite the German speaking populaces against would-be enemies.
Estimate: $200 - $300.
Provenance: From the Richard Jewell Collection.
