详细说明: 1857 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. MS-66 (NGC). A frosty golden specimen with pale olive highlights and exceptional eye appeal. The strike is sharp for the date, and the luster is extremely active. Perhaps the finest survivor from a mintage for the date of 20,891 pieces. The present coin is the finest certified 1857 gold three-dollars in the NGC Census -- for comparison we note a solitary MS-65 example of the date in a PCGS holder as the finest certified by that firm. Small raised die lump in field behind the 7 in the date. Numerous raised die lines are seen under low magnification. All told, an aesthetically appealing and physically sound example of the date, one that will see spirited bidding activity and, no doubt, a near-stratospheric hammer price for an example of the date. David Bowers Although $3 gold coins dated 1854, the first year of issue, are very common in Mint State, the availability tails off sharply after that, and by 1857 such pieces become rare. For the present coin the word opportunity may be more important than the price paid, as is true of quite a few coins in the present Baltimore sale.
