The 1885-S is an interesting date. While the mintage of 228,000 was not very large, a small number of lower Mint State grades survive, this date is UNKNOWN in Gem grades. Indeed, after more than 35 years of operations, PCGS and NGC COMBINED have graded just 15 coins finer than the currently offered MS63. Pleasing, rich original orange-gold patina is enlivened on both sides by a nice mint brilliance. The eye appeal is unmarred by any serious cuts, ticks, or marks. PCGS 116, NGC 53, CAC 6. The most recent one sold in February 2020, before the market for PCGS/CAC gold coins went up during the pandemic. The PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $2,500 and the CAC CPG value is listed at $2,210--we believe that with just a dozen graded higher at PCGS, this date and grade with CAC approval is underrated and this coin is worthy of a strong bid.
