- The presently offered Fugio is a superb, totally original, and unconserved GEM. Displaying a wonderful chocolate brown color that is wonderfully accented with a lustrous sheen. Nicely defined with a sharp strike, the motto MIND YOUR BUSINESS is clear, and the reverse rings are fully defined with intricate reverse clashing within. Among the FINEST examples graded, it is just about the most perfect, beautiful, satiny, GEM we've ever seen on a Fugio copper of any variety. Attributed as Newman 8-B, W-6740 variety, considered to be Rarity-3, and certainly among the best known! The Fugio copper is one of the first officially authorized coins struck for circulation in the young United States. Congress awarded a coinage contract to James Jarvis, and he was to strike up to 300 tons worth of copper into these coppers (sometimes referred to as Cents). It is estimated that some 400,000 were struck, far short of the millions anticipated. The design elements were taken from Continental paper currency notes issued the decade earlier, many inspired by Benjamin Franklin. The obverse, with its mottoes FUGIO and MIND YOUR BUISNESS, combined with the sundial motif translates roughly as "Time flies, so mind your business." The 13 interlocking chain links on the reverse represent the 13 original states with UNITED STATES and WE ARE ONE in the center. PCGS 7, NGC 4, CAC 2. The last example to sell in auction was not CAC-approved and realized $9,400 in the November 2013 Stack's Bowers auction. Across all varieties, there are certainly very few gems extant making this a very important opportunity for type collectors. Don't let it pass you by--how many other colonials can be found in GEM grades--at any price? Cert. Number 34903719 PCGS # 889
