- 1859 Pattern Liberty Seated Dime. Transitional. Judd-233, Pollock-280. Rarity-6+. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-61 (PCGS).
Obv:The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1859 Liberty Seated dimes. Rev:The Wreath of Cereals design adopted for regular issue Liberty Seated dime production in 1860. This is a smartly impressed specimen with razor sharp to full detail throughout the design. Both sides are toned nicely with flashes of gunmetal blue to otherwise dominant smoky golden-gray patina. Long ago adopted by serious students of the Liberty Seated dime discipline (along with the half dime aficionados who appreciate the same type within that smaller denomination), this transitional pattern was produced in the era when the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA was being moved from the reverse to the obverse where it would replace the familiar Stars Obverse design, thus creating the so-called "dime without a country." According to the website uspatterns.com, there are fewer than two dozen specimens of Judd-233 known.
Provenance: From the E. Horatio Morgan Collection.
PCGS# 4749.
