- A very historic relic of the Civil War, an issue that is rarely offered in any grade. Beautiful, iridescent toning gently caresses the smooth, brown copper surfaces. Both sides are sharply struck and the fields offer a wealth of reflection under the toning. The eye appeal is excellent. The story of the Confederate Cent begins, not in the recently formed Confederacy of seceded southern states, but in Philadelphia, where die famous die sinker Robert Lovett, on speculation, hoping to obtain a contract to strike coins for the Confederate Government, engraved a pair of dies. After striking a small number in copper-nickel (similar to the then circulating Indian cent), Lovett put the dies away, the legend says, because he was afraid of the federal government's response to his aiding the Confederacy. Years later, they came to light when he apparently accentually spent his pocket piece in a Philadelphia bar. From there, he sold his dies to John Haseltine and Colvin Randall. They struck a total of 74 restrikes in Gold (7), Silver (12), and Copper (55). During the striking of the 56th copper example, the dies cracked. PCGS 4, NGC 0, CAC 1. The most recent example was not CAC and sold for $43,475. This coin's remarkable quality and eye appeal will bring it to a very strong realization. One of the originals would cost well into the six-figures. This coin has almost as impressive a history and will appeal to any advanced collector of Civil War numismatics! Cert.
