1870 Seated Liberty Half Dollar. Proof-65 Cameo (PCGS). Secure Holder. A genuinely scarce proof issue among earlier-date Motto Seated Halves, the 1870 is much more elusive in numismatic circles than a mintage of 1,000 pieces might imply. It is likely that a fair number of examples remained unsold in the Mint and were eventually melted at year's end. Shimmering with reflective fields and softly frosted devices, both sides are dusted with mostly pale-silver tinting. More extensive toning is noted for the peripheries, where we see warm cobalt-blue and sandy-apricot colors. Overall pristine, and attractive in all regards, it should come as no surprise to read that this Gem is among the finest-known survivors of an underrated date.
