- The "Last 3 High" is a popular Red Book listed variety that was struck using two die pairs; JR-5 and JR-7, as here. The JR-5 is a common variety, listed as Rarity-1, where as the JR-7 is a challenging Rarity-4+. The authors of the JR reference (1984) noted "A very rare variety that is difficult to locate in any grade. Finest seen is VF-30." More recently the authors of the Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide (2015) reiterated its rarity above VF grades, but "at least three MS examples are known." Of those, this IMPRESSIVE MS66 must be FINEST KNOWN for the variety. This impressive GEM offers richly toned surfaces that are a delight to behold. Soft golden-russet and tan-gold patina at the centers blend with reds, oranges, pinks, greens and violet tones as your gaze moves to the rims. Sharply struck in general with very crisp star centers, drapery lines, and hair curls, and just showing some softness on the right side of the eagle's neck and wing. A thick underlying frost comes out in a light, further enhancing this GEM's superb visual allure. The placement of the TED in UNITED helps identify this as JR-7 as opposed to JR-5. The bases of TED get progressively higher on this marriage, and the bases of AM of AMERICA are joined. Since this is a later use of this obverse die (shared with JR-5), the die crack from the rim to the cap identifies this state of the obverse die. PCGS 4, NGC 0. This is the only JR-7 graded so fine, and it is the PCGS CoinFacts Plate Coin for the variety and the second plate coin for the Last 3 High type as well. There has not been an MS66 example sold sine February 2016, where one sold for $17,038 (was the much more common JR-5). The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $20,000 for the Red Book variety, the die marriage, as a Rarity-4+ should carry some premium for the advanced die variety specialist. Good luck!
