How rare is this Civil War date? PCGS has only graded 9 coins higher while CAC has beaned only 2! That says a ton about how this coin does NOT come! From a mintage of only 18,000, the vast majority went right into circulation, and they remained there for a long time. To date, PCGS has never graded a Mint State example! PCGS CoinFacts estimates that 60 examples are known in all grades, and a number of known examples show serious issues that would preclude grading, such as harsh cleaning, polishing, scratches, etc. In David Akers' auction survey, no example above XF was recorded! A generation or two ago, Akers said this date was grossly underrated, and we agree with him in 2022! Smooth surfaces reveal only the most microscopic, scattered ticks when using a strong glass. There actually is some light luster left. Most important about this coin, it has NOT been cleaned or messed with. Both sides are an even gold color, with zero spots or discolorations. Miss Liberty and the details show only the lightest and most even wear. The eye appeal is really great! PCGS 7, NGC 5, CAC 4. THIS IS THE ONLY XF45+. This coin has never sold via auction. Actually it just came back to the market after being gone for many years. A PCGS XF45 CAC from the Hendricks Set sold in April 2022 for $16,800 and this coin is way more brilliant! The current Collectors Universe value is $18,500. The quality and rarity of this coin are undisputable! Only nine are graded finer at PCGS, the finest being a single AU55 that has never sold in auction. The market for these rarities has truly evolved in the last two years and we expect this coin to bring a very strong bid when the hammer falls. Good luck. Cert. Number 41789751 PCGS # 8291
