- Ex Dr. Charles Link, noted on the PCGS label. For many, the most important coin in the sale. Overton collectors understand the rarity of this die pair, especially in high grade. Although Parsley’s Condition Census lists four uncirculated specimens (three as “MS 60”), your cataloguer believes that only two, perhaps three, will stand the test of time. (This is the 2 nd finest example I’ve handled over the past 30 years.) If you are a registry set collector you are familiar with the rarity of the XXX Edge variety. When two segments of the collecting population collide we expect an explosion. The bold, eye-catching – dare I say “booming” - luster of this untoned specimen is an appropriate catalyst. No marks deserve mention. The obverse die break at star 4 is well advanced, attesting to a late state of the dies. I note a curious indentation in the bottom of the (recut) U in UNITED. It is likely that a bit of foreign matter found its way into the recess of the die before this coin was struck. Dr. Link acquired the coin in March 2010 from a fellow BHNC member. The private treaty sale is recorded in Herrman’s AMBPR, confirming a sale price of $7,000. This is its first appearance at auction. The prior owner came upon it at a FUN Show bourse table “in the early 1990’s,” offered by a dealer “who did not understand its rarity.” Dr. Link recently acquired the finest known 1809 O.110 (PCGS MS 63), triggering a decision to tantalize us with this offering. Hearty congratulations to the next owner! Est. $5,000 to $10,000.
