- 1783 Washington Georgius Triumpho Token. Baker-7, W-10100. Rarity-3. AU-58 (PCGS). 135.1 grains. A glossy red-gold specimen with lively retained luster, and with traces of olive throughout. Some light marks are seen under low magnification, though no single mark is readily apparent to the unaided eye. Middle reverse die state, crack that runs vertically in front of Liberty not yet as bold as seen in its later state, beginning here in the field, crossing her arm, and then just to the top of the flag. An enigmatic issue that was long thought to be satirical in nature, as the bust resembles George III rather than George Washington. Breen's Encyclopedia (1988) notes: "Discovery of several "Plaited Mane" Jersey coppers (M.73-aa) made in 1788-1789, overstruck on specimens of the GEORGIVS TRIUMPHO, proves that this Washington piece, unlike any others dated 1783, was actually struck in the 1780s. All other Washingtons bearing date 1783 originated in Birmingham about 1817-1820." Choice for the grade and as nice as we've handled in recent times.
