1885 Nickel Three-Cent Piece. VF-35 (PCGS). CAC. Circulation strikes of the 1885 nickel three-cent piece are quite rare, with the population likely only in the hundreds. The offered coin has satin smooth surfaces and perfectly balanced steel-gray color throughout. No spots or other detractions are present, and a solid and highly desirable example of this rare issue. Business strike coins had long been difficult to differentiate from Proofs, but one feature has been determined to definitively tell them apart, as the business strike coins show a six percent clockwise rotation, while Proofs we struck with an approximately two percent clockwise rotation on the reverse. A prize for the date specialist that should not be overlooked as this issue is seldom offered in such wholesome condition.
